Manufacturing is squirming again

Imports of raw/auxiliary materials contributed up to 74.2 percent of total imports in August 2021,
while the portion of imports of capital goods was 141.47 percent of total imports. Meanwhile, imports of consumer goods were recorded at 1.89 billion US dollars and accounted for the smallest portion of 11.33 percent of total imports. Head of the Central Bureau of Statistics, Margo Yuwono, said that the increase in imports in the two categories of goods indicated the recovery in the processing industry. Demand in the industrial sector began to move, marked by an increase in imports of raw materials on a monthly and annual basis. In general, this indicator shows an improvement in economic activity in general. "The increase in imports of capital goods also shows that the need to increase production capacity in the industry is getting better," Margo said in an online press conference, Wednesday. Although a more in-depth study is needed, Margo said there is an indirect correlation between the increase in imports for industrial needs and the restrictions on community activities (PPKM) which were gradually relaxed in August. Throughout August, one by one the processing industries were given 100 percent leeway to carry out their activities by dividing them into two work shifts. The overall import performance in August 2021 was recorded at 16.68 billion US dollars, up 10.35 percent compared to July 2021. On an annual basis, import performance also rose 55.26 percent compared to August 2020. Specifically for non-oil and gas imports, an increase in overall monthly recorded at 9.76 percent with the value of non-oil and gas imports of 14.63 billion US dollars. Annual non-oil and gas imports also increased significantly by 49.39 percent.
